What Is Your Pelvic Floor and how can pelvic floor therapy support you?

Have you heard of your pelvic floor but maybe you don't understand what that actually means? Your pelvic floor consists of a group of muscles and connective tissues that support the bladder, bowel, and internal reproductive organs in the pelvis. It also forms the base of your core. As such, the primary functions of the pelvic floor include elimination, support, intimacy, stabilization and helping to manage intra-abdominal pressure and childbirth. The pelvic floor can also serve as a lymphatic ‘sump pump’ and shock absorber.

Pelvic floor therapy can help all women, whether or not they have symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction or are postpartum. This includes those who seek a deeper connection to their inner core and pelvic floor or want to improve core strength, alleviate symptoms, prevent future pelvic floor dysfunction, or have a greater understanding of their own pelvic floor functioning. Treatment can include, but is not limited to neurological re-education, stretching, strengthening, postural education,  breath training, core training, lifestyle considerations, body awareness, trauma release, and well as sexuality education and pelvic floor connection.

Pelvic Floor Therapy

What To Expect

Every session is personalized to you, your needs and your goals for working together. We will start with a comprehensive evaluation where we will dive into your story, all aspects of your health, and any pelvic floor related challenges. I will do a physical evaluation following that to look at your posture, how your whole body moves, balance and stability during functional tasks, your breathing patterns, and the strength and coordination of your entire abdomen, pelvis, thighs, lower back, glutes, and hips, while also checking those areas for tightness and tenderness.

After that, I will share some basic education on your pelvic floor to get started. We will then set goals and put together a fully custom treatment plan to help you to get back to doing what you love pain free.
