Pelvic Floor basics you should know

Have you ever explored the connection between your pelvic floor health and your overall well-being?


Let's start with what your pelvic floor is and what its job is within your body.


Pelvic floor is a term that refers to a series of muscles that form a natural hammock at the bottom of the pelvic bowl. These muscles are continually active, performing vital functions that we often take for granted. Just like other muscles in the body, they can become weak, tight, imbalanced, or fatigued. Events like childbirth, surgeries, anxiety, or any other kind of trauma can disrupt the balance of the pelvic floor.



Four of the main roles of the pelvic floor


1). Sphincter control - squeezing and relaxing so that you can control when you pee, poop, or pass gas.


2). Support - acting like a "floor" for your urethra, vagina, and uterus (or your prostate), bladder, bowels, rectum, and anus, supporting against gravity and managing increases in abdominal pressure.


3). Keeping your body in balance - the pelvic floor is the bottom part of your core, which helps to stabilize your low back, hips, pelvic girdle, and trunk, so that you can move your arms and legs and perform functional movements.


4). Sexual Roles - the pelvic floor assists with arousal, relaxing during intercourse, and contracting during climax for both men and women.


The pelvic floor is one of the areas of our bodies that we often take for granted or don't pay special attention to or maybe don’t even know exists. I have found that it can be one of those parts or functions of our bodies that we aren’t taught about and then becomes a "taboo topic". Then people brush off symptoms as "normal", when in reality, these issues may be common, but they are not normal. We deserve to expect better when it comes to our health care.


Some of the general signs that you may be experiencing pelvic floor issues include: lower back or hip pain that will not go away with standard treatment, pain during sex, tailbone pain, pelvic or abdominal pain, chronic constipation, healing from trauma (such as childbirth, surgery, etc.), bladder or bowel incontinence or leakage, and interstitial cystitis (IC) aka painful bladder syndrome.
